Do I take away or add? This has become an interesting question regarding Lent during a pandemic. Taking away now seems so fruitless and empty since most of us have been doing this for the last year plus. Fasting for thin old me is just out of the question. Giving up buying unneeded clothes? That’s not going to work either. I’ve only bought a sweatshirt and a pair of athletic shoes in a year. So why not ADD, instead of taking away? This is what I decided to do. I’m taking 1 hour every day to write something… an opinion piece (Jesus knows I have opinions) or a poem or work on a short play or monologue or whatever I choose to write at that moment in time to focus my mind in a new way for the 40 days of Lent. I haven’t done anything like this since elementary school. I have no idea how this will go, but you know… I don’t think that that’s what really matters. The desire and effort taken for a closer relationship with God is what counts. Good luck with your Lenten practice. Give it a go. It’s not too late to start. If I can do this, so can you.
